This past weekend at the Monmouth Museum, our visitors explored the world of surrealism through a craft inspired by Salvador Dalí’s iconic elephant imagery. Known for their impossibly long, thin legs and dreamlike presence, Dalí’s elephants appear in several of his works, including The Elephants (1948), symbolizing weightlessness and the contrast between strength and fragility.
Families created their own interpretations of these surreal creatures using paper, paint, and creative construction techniques, learning about how Dalí used symbolism and unexpected forms to express complex ideas. The activity offered a fun and approachable way to introduce surrealist concepts, while encouraging kids to stretch their imagination and think beyond the ordinary.
Thanks to all who participated — we look forward to continuing to connect art history with hands-on creativity each weekend.
