The Monmouth Museum is honored to present “The Bias Inside Us,” a compelling community engagement exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). The exhibition will be on view in the Main Gallery from August 9 through September 7, 2025, with a free opening reception Sunday August 10th from 4 to 6pm.

“The Bias Inside Us” explores the social science and psychology of implicit bias, its effects, and what we can do to recognize and counter it. This thought-provoking exhibition encourages visitors to examine their own biases through powerful imagery, interactive displays, and deeply personal stories.
The exhibition includes six core sections: Introduction, The Science of Bias, Bias in Real Life, Serious Consequences, #RetrainYourBrain, and Personal Reflection. Visitors will gain insight into how biases form, how they manifest in everyday decisions, and how they influence systems

and institutions. One highlight is the Humanae Project by Angélica Dass, which uses photographic portraits to reflect the true spectrum of human skin tones—challenging the idea of race as a biological category.
“We are proud to bring this timely and nationally relevant exhibition to our community,” said Erika Schaefer, Executive Director of the Monmouth Museum. “It’s more than an exhibit—it’s an opportunity for dialogue, understanding, and action.”
In addition to the Smithsonian exhibition, the Monmouth Museum will feature artwork by select New Jersey artists, exploring personal perspectives and community narratives related to bias, identity, and belonging. 60 artists have been selected to be part of an accompanying exhibit to compliment The Bias Inside Us. The art was selected by Bryant Small, an award-winning artist, curator, and Co-Founder of Kaleidoscope.Art (KAAI Inc.), a collaborative platform empowering

artists through generative AI. Recognized for his inclusive and innovative curatorial approach, Small has exhibited nationally and curated notable exhibitions.
Educational resources including “The Bias Inside Us” Educator Toolkit will be available for teachers and community groups, and the Museum will offer related programming throughout the exhibition’s run.
